12 Email campaign ideas for product businesses in January
I’m going to make planning emails really easy for you this month. Here are 12 (!!) ideas that you can use for your Shopify biz. I cherry-picked these Klaviyo campaign ideas from my 2024 Campaign Planning Template, so if you're stuck on what campaigns to send to your subscribers this month, start with these.
Depending on what you sell, January is notoriously slow for sales. Lean into the “treat me” emails, clear out old stock in your sale, add new lines to keep your sale fresh and use urgency to end your sale at the end of the month.
Another idea that I love, is to send £10 gift vouchers to customers who spent £££ with you over Q4 as a thank you.
Let’s dive into each of these ideas:
#1. 2023 Round Up of Top Moments:
Love this idea for small product-based businesses. What new products did you launch last year? What were your highs and lows? Did anything go viral? Did you have a celebrity shopper? Pick out some fun, uplifting and quirky stats from your biz (for example, how many postal labels did you use? How many post runs did you do?, etc.).
#2. New lines added to the Winter Sale:
Chances are if you launched your winter sale around Christmas or Boxing Day, things are starting to slow down. Add new lines to the sale to keep it feeling fresh while you push it through January.
#3. Collect more Birthdays
This is my secret weapon for more sales in January for Shopify businesses. If you have a giftable brand, you can do this. Collect birthdays and make sure you have a birthday flow in Klaviyo too. January is a great month for data housekeeping. Create a segment for anyone who is subscribed had hasn’t given you their birthday yet. Email them to ask for it.
#4. Treat for Blue Monday.
Blue Monday is a gimmick. Everyone knows it. So lean into it and give them a treat for the day. Why the F not?? “Nothing blue around here… take £10 off anyways.” Or feature a collection of all your blue-coloured items.
#5. Top reviews from last year
Social proof over and over and over again. Not only is it a good little ego boost for a small business to read your reviews from last year, pick out particularly stand-out ones and feature them in a review email. Also, take note of any negative ones… and turn those into a FAQ email. Or at least take note and see if you need to add more information to your product page for example.
#6. Reward VIPs with £10 off
I like to do this with anyone who ordered over £X over Christmas. Maybe 2x your AOV. Send them a dynamic Klaiviyo coupon code for £10 off as a thank you for their support.
#7. Fave weekend links
January is a time to nurture your subscribers, so send them some lovely content to read with their Saturday AM coffee. Here are a few that you might include (pick 3): fave podcast, fave book, interesting article you read lately, initiative/habit you’re trying this year, a playlist of Spotify, a must-buy for your wardrobe, an exhibition you loved that’s still running, a funny meme that stopped your scroll. Include 1 product-related link.
#8. Customer survey
Find out more about your customer in the form of a quiz. People loooooove these. Make them short and sweet and offer a reward for filling it out, even if it’s putting their name into a hat to win a gift voucher.
#9. Self-care tips for January
We still have a little way to go until spring, so what are your favourite ways to find calm in the middle of winter? Share your tips!
#10: Bestsellers of 2023
Round-em up! What were your top-selling items from last year? Rank them and make it fun, “Who took the top spot? Our products ranked… by you!”
#11: Band FAQs & USPs
You likely got a ton of new subscribers over Christmas, so now is a great opportunity to reconnect with them and introduce the important stuff your brand offers and stands for. You could send this to existing subscribers and customers too, as a way to remind them of what they love about your brand.
#12: Valentine’s Gift Guide
This one’s for the end of January, time to drop your V-day gift guide for early and organised shoppers.
