How to use dynamic coupon codes

This comes up a lot, even with big brands. Some email lists still use codes like Welcome10 πŸ™ƒ

But not all codes are created equal and there's a time and a place for both dynamic and static coupon codes.

Let's get into it!

When to use Klaviyo's dynamic discount codes

Dynamic codes are unique, one-time-use codes automatically generated in Klaviyo. The are personalised to each customer. They:

βœ… Prevent discount abuse (no more leaked codes on coupon sites!)
βœ… Let you create personalised incentives in flows (e.g., Welcome, Abandoned Cart, VIP emails or in the Post Purchase flows)
βœ… Expire on a set date or after a single use, so they can’t be reused

Use this kind of code in your automated flows.

When to use static discount codes (the Shopify ones)

Static Shopify codes are the same for everyone, meaning they can be shared easily. They:

βœ… Work well for site-wide sales & promos
βœ… Are easy to share on email and Instagram
βœ… Create urgency when paired with a limited-time sale

βœ… Are not evergreen, don't leave these running all the time unless it's something like an automatic bundle discount

Best for: Black Friday, pay day offers, seasonal sales, additional % off already-marked-down items, etc.

Discounting isn’t just about throwing out codes and hoping for the best and more sales.

It’s about placing the right incentives at the right time in your customer journey.

If you're not sure where to add the most profitable discounts, it's time to map it out.

Here's to sending better emails (with the right kinda discounts)!
